The “Soft Life” trend is buzzing around social media and with good reason. Platforms such as Instagram, Tiktok, YouTube ect, are seeing this popular topic being expressed by its creators more and more as of late.
The concept entails living without becoming engulfed in the rat race of life. It is living a life of comfort and ease with minimal stress. It champions self care, healthy relationships, boundary setting and high vibrational rituals. It rejects draining relationships, hustle culture and putting yourself last.
Admittedly, everyone has a different version of what living the “Soft Life” means. Additionally, this lifestyle does not mean you have to be wealthy although It helps. And while tips such as creating a self care routine are pretty common I think there are other interesting ways to live a soft life that are not widely talked about. Therefore, in this post lets explore how to live a soft life in brilliant and unconventional ways that will not break the bank.
Living a Soft Life Requires Discipline.
Living an unconventional soft life means you are choosing to stress less and prioritize your happiness and health while having a typical lifestyle and income. This means that you have to become more intentional with how you live your life. For example, If your self care routine entails a daily workout, you may have to wake up 4 or 5 am in the morning to get that workout in. Perhaps you want to purchase a spa day for your birthday, maybe you have to save 20 dollars off of each pay cheque to make that happen.
The reason I list discipline as one of the major ways to live a soft life is because most people do not have the privilege to experience a life where they can completely dive into pampering themselves. You work a 9-5, you have kids, a spouse and life is hectic. The only way you can adopt this lifestyle is to prioritize it.
Living a Soft Life May Cause you to Seek Therapy
A soft life is not just about sipping mimosas and being self indulgent to the point of irresponsibility. It requires self reflection to recognize when you need to give your self a pause. It is done with the purpose of being balanced and healthy. Its a lifestyle reimagined. One that may differ from the hustle culture many of us grew up in. This lifestyle may cause a lot of emotions to dredge up. Emotions from childhood, or the pain of watching your parents work so hard to make ends meet.
Therapy is a treatment plan to help you work through deep seated beliefs that may directly oppose your lifestyle now. There will be feelings of guilt, imposter syndrome and so many other feelings that may challenge your desire to live a life that is centered around living softly. Therapy will give you the release you may need to lead the life you desire without reservations.
Living the Soft Life Requires you to Choose the Easy Way Out.
Here me out here, what if I told you to absolutely lean into the path of least resistance in order to preserve your selfcare? This point requires a lot of self trust, wisdom and following your intuition. Would it be absurd if I told you its okay to choose the easy way out if the other option compromises your values, mental health or life you envision?
Taking the “easy way” through the path of least resistance means taking the path that brings you peace!
If a situation, club or community is making you uncomfortable? Leave.
The badge of honor for staying and suffering through what makes you unhappy is the reason why so many of our parents ended up sick and depressed.
That’s really all there is to it.
Now as mentioned earlier, use wisdom and self reflection to carefully address each scenario in your life. Just remember that the “Soft Life” requires you choosing the less stressful option. But, this has to be in a responsible manner. And surely there are going to be difficult things in life that you must persevere through. For instance, you work hard at your business, you want to complete that degree, you want to work on that friendship. All of these things may require some degree of stress, but they are in alignment with the lifestyle you want and they cause minimal detriment to your mental wellbeing.
Create Boundaries in Your relationships
Abandoning yourself to be there for someone else is a recipe for disaster. Do not do this. In fact a lot of people do this in hopes of reciprocating some kind of validation, love or meaning to their own lives. Only to be left depleted and the taker more and more entitled than ever before. This kind of toxic, codependent relationship can be found anywhere. This can be found in family, friends, church, clubs, work you name it.
Creating boundaries and reclaiming your power is a valid way to put your self first and honor your own needs above another’s. The age old saying is true. You can not give from an empty cup. Violating your boundaries will only leave you feeling resentful and bitter in the end anyway. So its better you put your boundaries in place and live life with your heart as light as a feather, then you will be living the soft life.
Have Fun.
Living a soft life means knowing how to have fun. Don’t take life too seriously. This is easier said than done when life itself is so challenging. But having fun and indulging in what makes you happy keeps you excited for life.
Keep your life an adventure and romanticize the mundane. You only have one life, give it all you’ve got.
