We have had enough- we quit! People are resigning like never before. Unlike generations before us, we no longer desire to endure the work week only to truly live on the weekends. We don’t want to battle through traffic to get to work, drink coffee to maintain focus, endure our boss being a complete jerk, being underpaid, undervalued, micromanaged, and the like anymore. We are choosing to live life every day and time freedom. Time to spend with our families and to take care of our aging parents. We want a flexible work schedule while feeling valued for what we can bring to a company. We simply want more.
Welcome to the Great Resignation. This phrase was coined by Anthony Klotz, a professor of management at Mays Business School of Texas A&M University The ongoing trend of the working class voluntarily leaving their jobs was first observed within the united states in the spring of 2021. This trend is believed to have been triggered by the ongoing pandemic. While I agree that the pandemic was the catalyst, this has been simmering under the surface for generations, and let me share my opinion as to why.
At the beginning of the pandemic, many countries were shutting down in order to put a stop to the spread of the disease. As an answer to this phenomenon businesses started to offer to telecommute. This meant that employees could now work from home. What they didn’t know was that they were “waking ” up a generation of people that were once kids that suffered through their mother going to work on a Sunday and leaving them to enjoy Sunday dinner alone, Their dads not making it home for Christmas because he had to work. They piqued the appetites of a generation that wrapped themselves in their mother’s clothes and waited for her to walk through the front door all because of her demanding job.
Work Life Balance
As a result, Millennials- those born from the late ’80s to mid-’90s and the Gen z or the zoomers, born late 90’s to 2010 were confident that a lifestyle that would allow them to be home with their families more and to do what they loved was a possibility. The Great Resignation seemed to be a natural progression, to be honest. We want work-life balance, the ability to work when and how we want and to be able to enjoy life.
Better Work Conditions
There came a time when employers wanted their employees to return to the office. Employees bemoaned the idea because work can be completed just as competently from their couches, as they discovered. The possibility of being exposed to the virus is too high of a price to pay. Think about it, why am I risking my very life to do the same work I can do from home?
Remember, that sexist coworker that thinks he can do everything better than you because he was born male and you weren’t? Yea, you don’t have to sit in a room with him anymore for eight hours and jeopardize your mental health anymore. That boss that keeps making inappropriate jokes? Why put up with that when you simply do not have to anymore? The Great Resignation is here, and you can leave.
We Want Better Pay
This may be the single most powerful reason why people are resigning at such a high level. My generation and the one after me watched our parents smile through terrible compensation because they had us to take care of. However, Millennials and Gen Z’s are waiting longer statistically to have kids.
The younger generations placed value on higher education before starting a family, believing it will earn us higher-paying jobs. While that may be true for some, that is not the case for all. However, because this generation placed such high value on education and delayed procreating, they have more freedom. Many Millennials and Gen Z’s therefore have the ability to quit a low paying, no benefits kind of job or start a business or whatever floats their boat.
But, at the end of the day, I believe we all want the same things as the human race. We want to be happy. We want to spend time doing the things we love with the people we love, and we want the ability to take care of our loved ones. We want this while being able to earn a living.
Do I think everyone wants to be an entrepreneur? No. While that may be a solution for many. Others just want more flexibility. Should a revolutionized work system be introduced? How about a four-day work week? Can we come into the office once or twice a week only? Perhaps coming into a physical building could be reserved for essential persons only? These changes to our work environment are newly emerging, but something tells me that the evolution will continue and blossom into something beautiful and productive for both organizations and people alike.
These are just my opinions. So what do you think about The Great Resignation? Let me know your thoughts below.

I’m not a millennial, but did resign from a job about 6 years ago because my work-life balance wasn’t appreciated. I was reprimanded for taking care of my kids when sick and dealing with other urgent family matters. I don’t think you need to be an entrepreneur to go out on your own with today’s gig economy. If I were to talk to someone who is in the same situation I was in 6 years ago, I would advise them to do everything they could do be prepared financially so they aren’t forced to go into another bad working environment because they are pressed to pay the bills.

Hi, Eric here with a quick thought about your website thisisdeshante.com…
I’m on the internet a lot and I look at a lot of business websites.
Like yours, many of them have great content.
But all too often, they come up short when it comes to engaging and connecting with anyone who visits.
I get it – it’s hard. Studies show 7 out of 10 people who land on a site, abandon it in moments without leaving even a trace. You got the eyeball, but nothing else.
Here’s a solution for you…

My name’s Eric and I just came across your website – thisisdeshante.com – in the search results.
Here’s what that means to me…
Your SEO’s working.
You’re getting eyeballs – mine at least.
Your content’s pretty good, wouldn’t change a thing.
BUT…
Eyeballs don’t pay the bills.
CUSTOMERS do.
And studies show that 7 out of 10 visitors to a site like thisisdeshante.com will drop by, take a gander, and then head for the hills without doing anything else.
It’s like they never were even there.
You can fix this.
You can make it super-simple for them to raise their hand, say, “okay, let’s talk” without requiring them to even pull their cell phone from their pocket… thanks to Talk With Web Visitor.
Talk With Web Visitor is a software widget that sits on your site, ready and waiting to capture any visitor’s Name, Email address and Phone Number. It lets you know immediately – so you can talk to that lead immediately… without delay… BEFORE they head for those hills.
