The most comforting food on the planet.
We all know that noodles are some of the most comforting food on the planet. Foods such as Ramen, Lo Mein, Pad Thai all have a special place in many hearts. And right along with them, we have our beloved Chow Mein. My house is a Bahamian – Guyanese home with my husband being Guyanese and I am Bahamian. I say this to disclaim that I may put a little twist on the recipe. But we still find it to be delicious. Please feel free to add protein in the dish if you wish!
Here are a few reasons Chow Mein is beloved by many.
- It’s quick to make
- Lots of veggies ( You can do as you please here, I do list the ones I used in this recipe below)
- It’s Versatile
You can find Chow Mein noodles here. If you’re unable to order, then you can use Ramen noodles or any thin wheat noodles found at your local food store. Make sure to follow the cooking instructions according to the package, each one has a different cooking time. This is the one that I used below largely because my husband is Guyanese and these noodles were what he grew up eating.
What goes into Chow Mein?
Chow Mein is usually filled with vegetables with a little crunch to them. Think, bean sprouts, cabbage, or carrots. However, I used whatever I fancied as listed below and I encourage you to do the same. Traditionally meat is used. But today we will omit meat. Luckily, my husband and I didn’t even need it.
What about the Sauce?
Now, many people make their sauce from scratch but we used a little shortcut. Chiefs Chinese sauce and Chow Mein Powder. This stuff is a little addictive so you have to pace yourself. This sauce gives the noodles a nice flavor and a light brown coat to the noodles.
